The result of this sad event is a film that can be considered a tribute and which is finally being released in theaters around the world in recent weeks.
Wakanda Forever
Sequel to the first episode released in 2008, starring Chadwick Boseman, Wakanda Forever is now ready for release in cinemas around the world.
Thirtieth film in the Marvel Cinetic series, this film closes a thread called "Phase Four".
Wakanda Forever is the natural continuation of Black Panther, a film that we recommend you watch again to better enjoy the new episode of the series.
In case you don't want to, here's a quick summary.
The first film in this series, released in 2008, was directed and co-written by Ryan Coggler, who also directed this new installment.
The story of Black Panther is inserted into the Marvel genre following the fragmentation that occurred in Captain America: Civil War.
From Black Panther to Wakanda Forever
The Black Panther film sees the death of the king of Wakanda in its opening phase. An event that shocks the country and draws the young prince T'Challa ( Chadwick Boseman ) to Wakanda to become its new King.
Wakanda is the protagonist location of both films. An imaginary Kingdom of Central-East Africa, it shows the world the appearance of a poor country, a desert area where the few inhabitants struggle to have enough food and shelter. A condition of discomfort that is expertly studied, given that in reality the real Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation in the world, is hidden behind a clever "smoke screen".
Such an advanced condition bestowed above all by the presence of vibranium deposits. This alien mineral with extraordinary potential and uses arrived in these lands via a meteorite that crashed a few millennia earlier.
A precious mineral that helps in the technological development of the civilization of Wakanda and which is also the protagonist of the armor of another famous Avengers character. Vibranium is in fact the metal with which Captain America's very powerful and indestructible shield is forged.
In the first film of this mini series T'Challa returns to Wakanda ready to take up his father's legacy and ascend the throne of Wakanda, but the succession will not be exactly smooth.
From these power clashes the character of Black Panther was born who only thanks to his intelligence and strength will be able to take the place he deserves.
The first film ends with Black Panther about to enter the United Nations headquarters, ready to reveal the truth about Wakanda to the world, also with the aim of helping nations and peoples with the technologies and knowledge given by vibranium.
This is the point at which we stopped, anxiously waiting to know the developments of Wakanda and Black Panther.
Wakanda Forever, the plot and what it was supposed to be
As already indicated, during the filming of Wakanda Forever, the protagonist, the actor who played the role of Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman passed away.
Not an accident on the set but a terrible disease took Boseman's life. In fact, the actor discovered in 2016 that he had stage three colon cancer, which then progressed to stage four in 2020.
An illness that did not take away the desire to live and work from the actor, who kept his diagnosis secret by informing only very few people of it.
An illness that culminated in the actor's passing on August 28, 2020.
The death of the person who impersonated Black Panther also changed the fate of Wakanda Forever.
Wakanda Forever, as it was meant to be
The unfortunate event also influenced the plot of the film. Coogler has in fact made it known that Black Panther 2 was supposed to be the story of King T'Challa dealing with the loss of time and years due to the Blip caused by Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War . Having disappeared along with many other Marvel heroes, he only returned at the end of Endgame to help in the final battle.
« The tone would have been similar – said the director – The character would have suffered from the loss of time, for having returned after 5 years. As a man with many responsibilities towards many people, returning after a forced absence of 5 years would be the focus of the film. He would have suffered for the time he couldn't be there. The pain of this absence would have been one of the main themes of the plot ."
Wakanda Forever, as it is
Following the death of the main actor, the sequel script was modified, including T'Challa's death in one of the initial phases.
This decision was supported by both the cast and fans of the title, who saw it as an indispensable homage to the late actor.
The plot was therefore modified and the focus of the story is the death of T'Challa and the following expansionist aims of various world powers, ready to take advantage of this moment of sadness and confusion.
The main objective is therefore to get our hands on the vibranium deposits. The dangers will be many and will come from other "imaginary" kingdoms, such as that of Talokan and his king Namor who intends to extend his dominion and kingdom from the sea to the land.
A bloody attack, which will serve to restore unity in the royal family of Wakanda, who will be forced to respond to the attacks to defend the kingdom and the population.
The tribute to Chadwick Boseman
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has not been canceled but the necessary changes have been made. There has been a long discussion, even among fans, about the possibility of replacing Chadwick Boseman with another actor, who would then take his place in the role of Black Panther. This possibility was discarded. We therefore opted to shift the focus to other characters, while at the same time honoring the memory of Boseman. T'Challa's death was then worked into Black Panther: Wakanda Forever . With this choice Coogler wanted on the one hand to pay homage to the young actor, on the other to allow the entire team to grieve, welcoming everyone's feelings. “He created something that could honor him by carrying the story forward,” said Lupita Nyong'o , who plays Nakia.
In the plot of the film itself and in the trailer there are many references to Black Panther.
We can find a first tribute to the actor who died prematurely already in the teaser trailer, where the soundtrack is represented by the notes of No Woman No Cry by Bob Marley in the version of the Nigerian singer Tems.
The trailer also contains a tribute to T'Challa printed on a mural and written in the Wakandan language, which translated means: "The king and the panther will live forever in us" .
