How the best e-commerce sites are selected

The Stars of E-Commerce 2022 is the result of an analysis based on 48 objective and subjective criteria.
First, Statista prepared an initial list of over 8000 online stores in Italy, searched through online databases, price comparison portals and industry lists. The shops with the highest traffic generated in Italy in 2021 were selected for a subsequent evaluation phase. Digital product sites (e.g. spotify.com, netflix.com, booking.com), marketplaces (e.g. ebay.com, Subito.it), B2B e-commerce, shopping clubs (e.g. privatia .com) and online stores that do not have their site in Italian.
The over 1500 shops that passed this first selection were tested individually by a team of analysts with reference to 6 evaluation dimensions: "Structure and ease of use", "Security", "Payment", "Purchase and delivery", “Customer service and communication” and “Technical performance”, each of which consists of objective criteria, for a total of 40 objective criteria.
At the same time, in a survey conducted through an online panel, over 3000 consumers evaluated the appearance of e-commerce stores according to 8 subjective criteria (e.g. “The homepage is clear and well structured”). At the same time, participants were asked to indicate which criteria they considered most important when evaluating an online shop (e.g. "Delivery information", "Data security
of the customer” etc.). Finally, Statista attributed to each site and for each of the 6 evaluation dimensions a score calculated starting from both the objective tests and the survey results. The final score was therefore obtained by attributing a different weight to each of the evaluation dimensions, determined on the basis of the consumer questionnaire. The final ranking is made up of the 500 online stores with the best overall score, classified into 8 product categories which are in turn divided into 34 total segments.
