5G high speed without risks for the technology of the future

5G (acronym for 5th Generation) indicates a set of new generation technologies that increase the already excellent possibilities of 4G. This new technology was designed and created with the aim of increasing connection speed and improving wireless services.

In fact, 5G technology allows a theoretical peak speed equal to twenty times that of 4G while ensuring significantly lower latency at the same time. This fact, like the improvement in speed, makes this technology suitable for the challenges of the future.

The combination of low latency and high speed makes this new protocol perfect for all cases where immediate wireless communication is needed without even minimal interruptions. Perfect examples of creations possible only with 5G are driverless driving systems, online gaming , video conferencing and the management of remote devices from a fourth generation Internet perspective.

Presented and introduced for the first time in 2019, this technology is still not consolidated today but rather often opposed and criticized.

Paradigm shift

Every technology has a main purpose for which it is designed. If for 3G the primary objective was to create a minimum of data traffic, with 4G it was decided to focus on the robustness of the connection. The objective of 4G is to guarantee its durability, trying to avoid interruptions and line losses which are poorly tolerated by users.

A further step forward comes from 5G which, taking the maintenance of the line as consolidated (at least in high connection areas) leads to speeding it up in order to make it truly high-performance.

Possible applications of 5G

The advantages of 5G are many and obvious. The improvement in speed and bandwidth, combined with minimal latency issues makes Gd an evolutionary technology in many areas. Not only does this technology improve our current concept of browsing, downloading and streaming, but it opens up new possibilities in many different sectors.

Applications of 5G are in fact possible in many areas. In particular:

Public and private transport

5G connectivity will allow self-driving cars to obtain continuous and immediate communication with other cars and with signs and other subjects present on the road. Rapid connectivity also allows means of transport and active signs to be synchronized with each other, as already happens in some Italian cities, where public transport interacts with the traffic light network to minimize waiting and interruptions.

Medicine

The high-speed connection combined with unparalleled quality will make it possible to carry out consultations, remote medical interventions and use virtual and augmented reality in the care of patients far from specialized hospitals. The artificial intelligence that can also be developed thanks to 5G will then allow the doctor to have all the theoretical information, clinical cases and the patient's medical history at a glance for precise and timely diagnoses.

Assistance

With machinery as well as for people, carrying out a technical intervention will be decidedly easier. Technicians in the field will be able to intervene on problems or carry out repairs with the support of specialized centers that will be able to send information, diagrams and models in real time, also taking advantage of augmented reality, for a simplicity and level of intervention that is not even thinkable today.

Agriculture

When a good is limited, the best thing that can be done with it is to increase its yield. This also happens for agricultural land, which will be "enhanced" by technologies managed via 5G. Autonomous driving systems, drones, technological solutions that monitor fields in real time, all this will be possible thanks to 5G.

Emergencies

In the event of disaster emergencies or accidents, speed of action combined with coordination is crucial for a successful intervention. 5G promises a revolution in this area too thanks to greater precision in positioning and continuous contact between the various vehicles.

How does 5G work?

5G ensures greater speed and lower latency thanks to the exploitation of bands that have remained unused until now. This connection technology relies on two completely different frequency spectrums. On the one hand, Sub-6GHz travels on frequencies between 3.4 and 3.6GHz. On the other hand, the millimiterWave (mmWave) which exploits the higher frequencies, those ranging from 24.25 to 29.5Ghz.

These frequencies are the most interesting for the consumer customer, but at the same time those that have received the most criticism and doubts.

From a technical point of view, mmWave allows for high-speed, high-quality performance even when standard 4G networks are not sufficient. Arenas, concerts, events and moments in which everyone wants to use the internet (New Year's Eve is a perfect example) will no longer present connection problems.

However, these frequencies ended up "in the eye of the storm".

5G and health risks

5G could serve up to one million connected devices per square kilometre. This number would lead to a multiplication equal to 1000 times that of the current numbers. This will increase the traffic for network access points and consequently the number of cells and antennas that will have to be installed.

This is why researchers and part of the public have called for a moratorium on installations, in order to understand if these frequencies will really do harm.

To date there is no scientific proof of the same and countries further ahead than Italy from an installation point of view (Japan and South Korea) seem to confirm the absence of problems.

5G in Italy

Even in our country the upgrade to 5G is progressing at great speed, with the centers of the main cities already covered. The road map provides coverage for the majority of the country by 2026, for an unprecedented technological upgrade.

In the technological field, many wireless devices, including smartphones, are starting to be equipped with modems that can exploit this technology. A first taste intended for top devices, but which will certainly be extended to all categories of wireless devices in the coming years.

An obligatory step for the exploitation of new technologies and the true implementation of IoT (Internet of Things), the start of 5G was not the best, but after the necessary studies and related confirmations we are certain that in a short time it will become a standard of which no we will no longer be able to do without it.
