Desktop PC, not a simple desktop PC but a multifaceted solution
When we talk about desktop PCs, our imagination immediately thinks of the classic "desk PC".
Nothing wrong with this link, given that the literal translation of desktop PC is precisely that of table, office or desk PC.
But despite being a "fixed station" PC, it can be declined in many forms, based on uses and needs.
But let's start from the beginning:
What is a desktop PC
Fixed type personal computer which due to its characteristics can commonly be placed on a desk. the desktop PC also known as desktop PC or in its extended form Personal Computer is probably the most requested category of personal computers, followed by portable computers or notebooks.
In Italian "personal computer to be placed on a desk", the desktop PC is a transversal solution, suitable for both professional and private uses. Of Italian in the personal computer or PC Desktop there is not only the translation, but also the origin, given that the first real Desktop PC introduced on the market was the Olivetti Programma 101 in 1965.
What does a desktop PC consist of?
Usually the desktop PC is made up of a set of four parts, which in some versions can be pre-assembled together. In fact, we find the actual computer unit, made in various shapes and sizes, the screen and the keyboard and mouse input peripherals.
An interesting feature of the desktop PC is its modularity and the possibility of updating and upgrading easily. The classic desktop computer is in fact composed of a case (the unit that contains the power supply, CPU, memory etc.) which is easily removable and in which it is possible, thanks to the space available, to replace or add electronic cards and memory banks or disks.
The desktop computer can be purchased pre-assembled from a brand that takes care of the complete construction or assembled in person or in specialized shops. This possibility of customization is unique and possible almost exclusively in personal computers (in notebooks it is in fact much more complex and limited by the space available).
Types of Desktop PCs
As indicated, the desktop computer has taken various forms over its 60 years of life. Some due to the miniaturization of the components, others due to specific needs. This led to the creation of six to seven different types of desktop computers :
Desktop Case
The Case Desktop is a type of desktop computer that had its maximum development in the 90s and 2000s. Composed of a processing unit developed horizontally, which usually also acted as a support for the monitor, this configuration was one of the most business choices. This configuration is the one that gave the Desktop PC its name. It is in fact the only one designed specifically and exclusively for placement on a desk.
Tower Desktop
In this configuration, the case block is designed for vertical use. Its typical location is usually that of the desk or the area below it. Given the much freer placement options compared to the previous model, the Tower Desktop quickly overtook the Case Desktop in customer interest. The Tower Desktop was then developed into various sub-formats
Super/Ultra Tower
It is the largest vertical case among those on the market, usually used for heavy-duty or specialized applications where there is a need for many cards and dedicated cooling systems. The Super/Ultra Tower is a case that can reach a height of more than 70 cm. This format is also known by the technical acronym XL-ATX.
Full Tower
A step below the previous one, for a computer that combines medium/large dimensions with mixed functionality. This type of case in fact has 5 or more bays (i.e. slots) for the installation of hard disks or CD/DVD players. We are therefore faced with a case that usually has dimensions ranging between 56 cm and the height of the Super/Ultra Tower. This type of case is usually indicated by the acronym ATX/EATX.
Mid Tower
From the field of giants we move to that of "standard" PCs. In fact, Mid Tower computers have standard dimensions which represent the best compromise between usability and possibility of updating. The Mid Tower in fact has a size ranging from approximately 43 cm in height up to 56 cm for the Mini Tower. This case usually contains 3 or 4 slots (bays) and is indicated with the acronym ATX.
Mini Tower
Even smaller dimensions for the Mini version. This version is in fact the one that is now used in all PCs for work use and in many cases of PCs for personal use. It is a case that has dimensions ranging from 35 cm up to approximately 45 cm. This type of case is usually indicated with the acronym mATX/ITX and usually contains 1 or 2 bays.
Small Form Factor
Also known by their acronym SFF or by the acronym MINI-ITX which they share with another model, this acronym includes all PCs that make minimal form factors. PCs in this category can in fact maintain the typical Tower form factor or be square.
HTPC
It is a Home Theater Personal Computer , a PC that loses its typical work connotation to take on a more playful and multimedia one. The shape also changes, becoming more similar to that of a console or a DVD player.
Not just traditional cases, the Desktop PC expands, in special shapes for non-traditional uses.
AllInOne 
The AllInOne is a particular type of desktop computer that integrates the display and central unit (in extreme cases also the keyboard) into a single block. Chosen for its lack of cables and its design, this type of desktop computer is often chosen for shops, showrooms or home locations where the computer remains visible.
Nettop computers
Computer designed for almost exclusive use linked to a network or server. It can be considered the equivalent of a Chromebook, but for a desktop.
Desk PC
Model with limited and highly scenic characteristics. A PC desk is a computer "embedded" in a glass or transparent PVC desk, very spectacular and present almost exclusively in the world of extreme gaming.
It's easy to talk about Desktop PC, but in practice with this definition we don't mean a specific machine, but only a category of computer.
