All in one PC, a hybrid solution with only advantages
We often find it next to desktop PCs and notebooks, but what exactly is an all in one computer ? What are the features and advantages of this interesting technological alternative to the classic desktop PC ? Why choose an all in one computer instead of a desktop PC?
These are the questions we asked ourselves and which we will try to answer in the following lines.
What is meant by All In One?
As can be immediately understood from the name in English (all in one literally means everything in one), this name and its acronym ( aio ) refers to a computer in which all the various parts are contained in a single chassis.
From a technical point of view, there are different configurations and possibilities of all-in-one computers. In fact, this term refers to a computer in which the processing part (the so-called tower of desktop PCs ) is physically joined to the display. The variable is given by the keyboard; in some cases, especially in the past, it was also fixed to the camera body, in many others, especially in the more modern solutions, it is instead independent and connected only via the USB cable or via wireless connection.
The mouse, however, another fundamental component of the PC, is always separate and can also be connected via physical or wireless connection.
History of the All In One computer
The All In One or AIO computer has existed since the first computing solutions came out. In fact, it is a technical solution that has always traveled in parallel with desktop PCs, anticipating portable or notebook PCs by several years.
All in one solutions are part of computational history, with machines that have become milestones in computing such as some Olivetti, Commodore, IBM and obviously Apple/Macintosh series.
Compared to the first machines of the 60s/70s, the evolution has been enormous in every area, with giant strides, both in terms of the hardware characteristics and the aesthetic aspect of these solutions. Some of these (you're thinking of Apple too, right?) are now true design icons and are also chosen for the visual effect they generate, thanks also to the almost absence of cables.
All In One or desktop PCs. What are the main differences
Technological evolution has made it possible to significantly reduce the differences between desktop PCs and AIO solutions. If until a few years ago All In One solutions could not reach the performance of desktop PCs , especially at the same cost, now the situation has changed significantly. Continuous research and innovation, also derived from developments in the smartphone, tablet and notebook sector, has given new life and potential to All In One PCs.
To date, with this increase in performance, the differences between a desktop PC and an "all in one" solution lie mainly in the aesthetic and construction aspect of the machines. The rationalisation, miniaturization (and disappearance) of some external peripherals (floppy disk reader, CD-ROM etc.) has further lightened these differences and made the All In One solution a perfect alternative to the classic desktop PC.
Advantages of an AIO computer
There are many advantages of an "all in one" computer compared to a desktop PC. It is sufficient to place the two PCs side by side and use them even for just a few minutes to immediately understand the potential of this solution. From our field tests we have found 11 great advantages (but we are convinced that there are many others...). Here they are:
Ease and simplicity of use. The all-in-one PC is truly user friendly. Very simple to use, moving and installing is much more intuitive than an equivalent desktop solution. Every physical button or port is easily and immediately reachable.Disadvantages of an “all in one” computer
Unlike the previous point, in this case we had much more difficulty compiling a list. This is because modern AllInOne PC solutions really have very few disadvantages. However, with an effort we managed to find some. Here they are:
Poor upgrade possibilities. An All In One PC like a notebook computer is usually difficult to upgrade. Usually you can only work on replacing the RAM. The rest of the components cannot be updated or only with greater costs and professional technical interventions. All in One or notebook?
The characteristics of the All In One PC often lead to it being mistakenly compared to a notebook . It is true that "all-in-one" PCs contain some characteristics that make them comparable to a notebook, but compared to the latter they have considerable advantages (when obviously they are intended for use in a "fixed location):
Brands that produce this type of computer
That AllInOne solutions are a valid and professional alternative can also be understood from the available offer. In fact, every computer brand now offers at least one series of All In One computers. This indicates that the market appreciates and buys this form factor and manufacturing choice.
The variety of proposals therefore allows any user to find the hardware solution that best suits their needs.
If your intention is to purchase a "fixed PC" for your home, shop or office, you should really consider an All In One solution for your needs . The practicality and elegance of this product make it suitable for all uses, replacing the desktop PC and leaving it only to some specialized niches (programming, gaming, etc.). If the aesthetic aspect and design is an important or fundamental factor in the choice for you, there is no doubt, the All In One PC is truly the solution for you.
