The project is presented in one of these semi-clandestine conferences and Steve Jobs is also among the interested listeners. Jobs immediately understands that what Woz created could be a perfect brain for the computer he is designing and convinces him to create a company.

The fruit of the union of the two geniuses is a machine that is purchased from a local computer shop. However, the shopkeeper wants the machines assembled and that is where the Garage comes into play, an increasingly frequent symbol of the start-up of glorious IT companies.

Birth of Apple

The computers made in this way are sold under the name Apple I. This semi-prototype, totally different from the current Apple MacBooks and other products from the Cupertino company, is the one from which it all began.

Apple I, in perfect Apple MacBook style, becomes a "game changer" of the IT industry, thanks to a combination of price and interesting technical features. The result thus obtained then led the two founding partners (to whom an "entrepreneurial" partner would be added) to found Apple, a company which would then be founded on April 1st 1976.

From garage to empire

The success of Apple 1 and subsequent versions brings economic availability into the pockets of the two partners. Capital that is not spent but reinvested, thanks also to the entry of a new financing partner. The financial resources are invested in development and new components, for the creation of Apple II , the first real computer capable of displaying graphics.

In 1977 this new generation of computers was presented at an industry event. The success is immediate and evident, with Apple starting to generate sales and earnings, to the point of going public and starting the conversion from "crazy idea" to "solid business".

Macintosh and future Apple MacBooks change the vision of the PC world

The success makes noise and leads to renewed interest in the Personal Computer sector. In fact, IBM and consequently the operating system developed by Bill Gates enter the field heavily. In this period the clear separation was born which will continue until today. On the one hand, the PC, driven by the commercial power of IBM, became the default solution chosen by large companies. On the other hand, the Macintosh, a solution chosen by freelancers and small companies.

During this period Steve Jobs also discovered the future of the computer. In fact, during a visit to the Xerox laboratories he discovered the power of graphic visualization, which he predicted would become the system that would bring personal computers into every home.

Jobs therefore decides to give Apple a swerve and opts for visual interfaces and for the first time presents the mouse, a true interpreter between man and machine.

It was a tumultuous period at Apple and Steve Jobs was ousted from his own company in 1985. Convinced of his ideas, Jobs did not give up and implemented them into a new company called NeXT Computer.

This new adventure will prove very interesting from a technological point of view, but less so from a financial point of view. NeXT Computer will in fact remain unfinished from an economic point of view, but will create some interesting products from an IT point of view. One of these is the operating system developed by Jobs, which will lead to the acquisition of the entire company by Apple.

Jobs then returns to his company as an advisor to the CEO and then climbs the ranks to become ad-interim CEO of the pale creature he left behind.

Apple is in fact in a crisis of ideas and results and only Jobs' volcanic ideas and changes of direction can turn the company's fortunes around.

Mac OS

The purchase of Jobs' company not only brings its owner to the helm, but allows him to combine operating system skills and release Mac OS

The new operating system is just the beginning of a broader renewal process, which for the computer also includes the creation of new work and programming environments, a series of new processors and Airport technology for the creation and management of networks wireless.

Not just personal computers

But Apple decides to no longer be just a manufacturer of personal computers. He makes this choice following two lines that once again anticipate the future:

• Create a series of single-brand stores, the famous Apple Stores, to give the customer the best possible approach to the Apple world;

• The series of products varies, creating PDAs and music players, inaugurating the iPod era.

The iPod era

The Walkman has now had its day, and the portable CD player has never made it big, so something new is needed. The novelty is the iPod family, consisting of small devices with a 5Gb hard disk and plenty of space for music.

The iPod is only the first step, followed by the Mini, Photo, Shuffle, Nano, Video and Touch versions.

In addition to hardware, Apple is also dedicated to the software and services side, launching iTunes.

Jobs' passing

Apple lost one of its two creators, and the world a visionary genius in August 2011, when Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer.
